Founded in 1979, the Formenti boatyard has a long tradition of meticulous craftsmanship in manufacturing inflatable boats.

Today the ZAR range of boats by Formenti is sold in all major European markets.

The company growth and the success of its product are the result of a precise strategy focused on quality rather than quantity, investment in R & D, the use of the best materials, advanced technology and a modern, well-organized production facility.

Developed and improved over the years, the company’s quality system was awarded ISO 9002 certification by the Italian Mercantile Registry.

The most advanced IT together with powerful, refined 3D software were introduced in the year 2000. Today, the entire range of prototypes, the moulds, full size and on scale models are produced by CNC (computer numerical control) machines, which guarantee the sharpest precision.

Quality of life on board: space, comfort and safety are the result of great attention to detail: grab-handles for all passengers, no projections that could cause injuries, water-tight seals, vent wing on the windscreen, ergonomic seats, modular lay-out of spaces.

Quality manufacture: all details taken care of down to the smallest parts: double joint covers on the pneumatic elements, seals under metal parts, self-locking screws and nuts (no tear-off rivets). Top quality materials and meticulous workmanship.


Maths calculations, simulations, the definition of water lines take shape in the model of the hull.  The result is the first boat prototype, which is tested and improved until it reaches the standards of the project: safety, comfort and performance, in order.  Tests are carried out in the most different sea and weather conditions: the results help to define the space and the volume of the deck, which must be manufactured according to the barycenter as well as the static and dynamic balance of the boat under any condition and at any speed.

Once the virtual project is perfectly defined, huge five axis milling machines with computer numerical control (CNC) give shape to the real boat: cut after cut they drill, plane and refine a big piece of a particular resin called “chocolate”.

Through accurate polishing, the magic touch of handwork finishes up the final prototype, from which the moulds will be obtained.
Once the prototype is finished and the moulds are ready, it is the turn of the boatyard: moulding, tubes, gluing, scuttlebutts, cushions.

A skilled production management takes control in order to balance refined craftsmanship with advanced technology.

It is the birth of a new ZAR.


For the construction of the rubber parts of ZAR boats, Cantiere Formenti exclusively uses ORCA® products from Pennel Industries: “High-Tenacity” polyester fabric with CSM (chlorosulfonated polyethylene) and CR (polychloroprene) coatings.

The tubular elements are made with internal and external butt straps and the junction between them and the hull is double for the entire perimeter.

The hull size is the most important parameter among all design elements to determine the navigation quality of a R.I.B. (Rigid Infl atable Boat).

Because of the tubular absence and the transom moved backwards towards the stern, all the ZAR models are equipped with a longer hull than all the other traditional R.I.B. of the same overall length.

All ZAR models must be compared with quite longer R.I.B. to find the same hull length.  Moreover, the absence of the tubular element in the bow (International patent) has made it possible to build hulls with a very deep V and to obtain models which perform very well under any sailing conditions.

The lateral tunnels (another patent) increase the lift at high speed, thus sailing is more comfortable under any sea conditions.


The originality of the “Zar project” – boasting 4 international patents – blends and enhances characteristics that are often at odds with each other. The absence of a tubular element at the bow creates a lot of extra room, also making it possible to optimize the shape of hull and deck.

At first sight, the result is an unparalleled living comfort and unique design. What in many cases only consists of a bench or little more has been transformed into a “lounge” through drastic redesigning of the stern section and relocation of the engine, an extension of the seats over the tubular sections, modular backrests and cushions.
The promise of on-board quality of life and boat flexibility, which has guided the “ZAR project” since the very first stroke of the designer’s pencil, has been kept and turned to reality.
